20 questions every Christian man should ask

20 questions that I am considering and encourage other Christian men to ask in order to soberly assess how we might take God more seriously.

My time in the Middle East has given me cause for much reflection. Perhaps the greatest challenge – after seeing the faith of persecuted Christians – relates to what it looks like for Christians in the West (starting with me) to take God seriously.

We have so many comforts, so many distractions, So many “empty excitements” as John Piper puts it, that we can so easily wander off course, into a life of me-centred mediocrity.

On my return, and also in my role as the Chair of the BASECAMP men's ministry, I've compiled 20 questions that I am considering and encourage other Christian men to ask in order to soberly assess how we might take God more seriously.

…for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:15-16

  1. When was the last time I shared the gospel?
  2. When was the last time I spent (even) 15 uninterrupted minutes with God?
  3. When was the last time I didn’t just read the Bible, but mediated on it, studied it and fed myself with it?
  4. When was the last time I prayed for my persecuted brothers and sisters?
  5. When was the last time I acknowledged my sin, confessed it to God and repented?
  6. When was the last time I sinned against another and asked for their forgiveness?
  7. When was the last time I asked my wife/children to forgive me?
  8. When was the last time I took radical steps to “cut off” sin in my life?
  9. When was the last time I denied myself in order to to follow Jesus?
  10. When was the last time I asked my wife “Is there anything I can be doing to love and lead you better?”
  11. When was the last time I asked someone “How can I pray for you?”
  12. When was the last time I finished a conversation with another Christian and concluded with “Let’s pray…”?
  13. When was the last time I said to God “I don’t want to, but because You asked, I will.”?
  14. When was the last time I said to God “My life is yours” – and meant it?
  15. When was the last time I reviewed my expenditure (both how I am spending money on myself, and where I am giving it away), and asked God if it is pleasing to Him?
  16. When was the last time I did something that is totally inexplicable apart from my love for God and faith in Him?
  17. When was the last time I didn’t have to publicly identify as a Christian, but chose to do so?
  18. When was the last time I prayed as my first (and not last) resort?
  19. When was the last time I used my influence (access to politicians, social media channels, bank account) for the good of those who have no voice?
  20. When was the last time I thanked God?

What would you add to this list?

Apart from changing the word ‘wife’ to ‘husband’ – why are these questions just for men to ask?

Hi Sharon, only because this was originally written as a resource for men’s ministry.
