Over at Mr Nifty I've just read a similar article - The dangers of using email. The article includes a church policy for how to use email in conflict resolution.

It's interesting how counter-cultural it is to a) encourage, and b) say it to someone's face. I had a similar situation when I wanted to encourage a male friend, but it wasn't easy (i.e. it felt weird). Our culture isn't familiar with praise, encouragement and affirmation.

Wow. I disagree with quite a few of them. Felt that for many of them, email is better because it organises and logs things. It can also be carefully worded and referred to again and again.

As far as counselling by email, I had the blessing of pointing a desperate young man to saving faith in Christ this week over email.

Anyway, your point is valid and taken. =)

Good article Steve. I've wrestled with many of these.

On p3. I had a guy come up to me after church the other day and say: 'I just want to encourage you in your youth ministry'. I don't know the guy very well, but it felt really counter-cultural genuine.

I think face-to-face encouragement is going to mark us out as Christians in this digital world. Some are better at it than others, but we should keep forcing ourselves to do it.
