Jesus used parables, stories, images and examples from his "culture" all the time... people love stories and things they can relate to. I think we use our brains and consult the Spirit about the use of videos and pop culture in our communication of the Gospel, but I ABSOLUTELY think we should use it. Just my two cents on a blog that is over a year old... in case anyone else reads it now (like I am).

Hmm Piper does have a point - i think providing something you show is reaching out with the Gospel Message or displaying an encouraging Christian Message that is evident, it can't hurt. New media should be used to bring more to Christ.. doesn't mean it is to replace preaching, but if it's a tool God has given us to use to reach a dying culture then I say use it...

Do you consider "Lord of the Rings" pop culture?

I would see no need to play the clip, but I would certainly refer to it to illustrate a biblical truth. Some of the more substantial authors such as Tolkien and C. S. Lewis yield many helpful illustrations of biblical truths.

This practice is not at all new. Spurgeon often referred to Pilgrim's Progress.
