How to create a booklet using Word Mac 2011

I've just upgraded to Microsoft Office for Mac 2011, and, according to Microsoft, it doesn't include the previous functions to create a booklet. Here's how to do it...

OK, I realise this is post is for a niche audience, but after spending 1.5 hours trying to figure this out, I thought I might as well save some others some pain.

I’ve just upgraded to Microsoft Office for Mac 2011, and, according to Microsoft (see below) it doesn’t include the previous functions to create a booklet:

The Microsoft support team were quick in responding (thank you, Jess) – in fact, they responded before I finished this post! Here’s a link to their workaround, or you can try my method, below.

For me, there were two challenges: 1. creating the booklet, and then 2. getting the pages to rotate correctly when printed.

Here’s what to do:

1. Create your document in Word Mac 2011.

2. Click ‘File’, then ‘Print’, then click on the ‘PDF’ button, and select ‘Create Booklet’:

If you don’t see the ‘Create Booklet’ option, install this free plug-in (download here) – h/t Tom for this link.

3. The booklet will automatically open in Preview. You now need to ensure the following two finishing options are selected:

Don’t choose ‘Booklet Options’, ‘Long Edge (Left)’, ‘Long Edge (Right)’, ‘Rotate Print Data 180 Degrees’ or any other combinations or options! Just choose ’2-Sided Printing’ and ‘Short Edge (Top)’. Also, make sure the page orientation is kept as portrait (and not landscape).

4. Press ‘Print’.

Hopefully I can save you the time I lost fiddling around trying to figure it out!

UPDATE

If you receive an error referencing ‘universal’, visit this link to download a more recent version of the plug-in.

UPDATE

Unfortunately I’m unable to provide on-going support for queries relating to this function. For any questions, please contact Microsoft Mac Support.

    okay…your post is somewhat helpful…

I just made the big change to the mac, and though challenging (compared to a pc) I like it.

I just tried to make a booklet, and using your way works well. thank you…

my question, though, is how to do it will legal-sized paper?

everytime I try, I get 2 pages (1 whole page) which is half empty on both sides and the print is so small, the congregation would need a magnifying glass to sing.

    Help!!!

    Thanks,
    Chris

PS – Just to make sure, I’m making all of my Christmas programs on the PC – no need to overstress during this hectic season!

Any suggestions?

I haven’t seen that error before. I’d suggest contacting Microsoft on Twitter – they’ve been very helpful for me.

I have a series of novels which I upload to the Internet, but like to have print copies for others to evaluate first.  Cheapest way is to print in booklet form, 2 up on letter size paper.  Local printing company is helpful as can be, but Mac lacks some of the basics existing on the Printer’s  PC.  Workaround.  Got “document statement” template from PC.  Copied material to this 8.5 x 5.5 inch template.  Take to Printer who is able to print booklet format on Xerox printer.

My HP LaserJet P1505 won’t handle 2-up without reducing text size.

After installing the “Create Booklet” plugin and then following your directions, I received the popup message that it wouldn’t work because the plugin wasn’t in Universal. Ideas?

I downloaded the plugin and now Word won’t open at all.  The message says I have to reinstall it.  Ug.

2 questions. did you create the booklet in word before you changed it over to this booklet format? or did you create your booklet in preview?
Also where did you find this: under print or where?
    3. The booklet will automatically open in Preview. You now need to ensure the following two finishing options are selected:
    thanks!

  • Fannagreen

I, too, am wondering where the print selections are. Did you receive an answer?

  • Ian Alwayn

Hi – all seems to work fine, except once the booklet opens in Preview everything looks scrambled. I don’t get the options (2-sided printing etc) as you mention once the booklet opens in preview…please advise..!

Hello, I still haven’t upgraded to the 2011 version and I use the 2008 version. You mention that the older version did have the booklet option but I do not find it. Could you please tell me where I can find the booklet option and how to use it in Word 2008? Thank you!

The ‘create booklet’ plug link does not work. Did it change internet locations or do you know of a different one that works?

  • Daniel

The plug in download link does not work any more

  • Cindy Wagner

Hi, How do you find the “finishing options”? I’ve looked everywhere, it seems! I installed the plug-in easily and my book reformatted and shows up in Preview just fine. Thanks for posting!

  • Jed

Thanks. The plug-in is just what I needed both for the candle service and the Book of Families. Jed
