An ambitious Bible reading plan

I stumbled across this ambitious Bible reading system earlier this week.

Here’s how the system is introduced:

“I have more wisdom than all my teachers, for thy testimonies are my meditation.” Psalm 119:99, right-hand page, left-hand column, dead center of page.

Many people ask me how it is that I know precisely where virtually everything is in my Bible. The answer: this system.

It’s a convicting and exciting idea, knowing the Bible inside-out. Too hard? The plan’s author is keen to dismiss this concern:

This is not merely a speed-reading program, nor is it a ‘study’ system. Read the description provided here to see how it works.  DO NOT be intimidated! I was a college dropout, ex-heavy-druggie when I started it. If I can do it — so can you!

Curious? Download the plan (PDF), or start this plan on YouVersion.

I’d like to give it a go, I’m just concerned given my past experiences with reading plans that I’ll struggle to make it through week 1!

Justin Taylor has pulled together a list of Bible reading plans, and YouVersion has a collection of plans that can be accessed on your phone, iPad, etc.

I haven’t done that plan, but I have done another intensive plan (bible in 90 days). While there is more work in an intensive program, I actually found it kinda helpful because you don’t get so bogged down in some of the harder sections and get the big picture easier than if you are spreading your reading out over a long time. Reading that much a day also provides a fantastic incentive not to fall behind!

I’m excited by this plan. The thing that often kills off my Bible reading is my self-expectations of “quiet time”: reflection, introspection, etc. But in this plan, you don’t need to “do” anything — just read! I’m going to try it!

We translated this system to Portuguese and posted it on our blog (with author’s permission of course). It’s a great tool and we love it. I encourage everyone to try it. It’s worth the effort.

Wife and I have just started – I bought a new Bible just so I could dedicate it to the system. I hope we get past the first week! :D

I started this plan five days ago. I just wondered how different my life, perspective and godliness might be if I dedicated some time to reading some serious chunks of the Bible. The most I’ve read in a day has been 3 chapters before this plan – 10 chapters a day is a lot, but it’s manageable.

I’ve been getting a lot out of it, and reading from different parts of the Bible both keeps the experience fresh, and is helping me to see links that I’d never seen before.

I look forward to hearing how others are impacted by giving this plan a go. Let’s pray for each other, that we’ll persevere with it!

By the way, the plan is available on YouVersion (which is how I’m keeping up with what to read each day!) – http://www.youversion.com/reading-plans/professor-horners-bible-reading-system

After finding out about it here, I began this reading plan. I’m sixteen days in, and finding it really helpful and manageable. I also hadnt read more than a few chapters a day before. I’m enjoying reading from such a wide range of books in one day. I’m interested to see how I find it once I start repeating the lists and begin re-reading books. Pray that I (and everyone else) can keep it up!

6 months in and I’m finding this really helpful, and recommending it to lots of friends!

That’s great to hear Arthur! Are you finding the time commitment manageable?

  • http://arthurandtamie.wordpress.com Arthur

I dropped the track for Proverbs and the track for Acts (combining them into the Wisdom track and the Gospels track respectively), so I’m reading 8 chapters a day rather than 10. I did this partly for the time commitment – it doesn’t take more than half an hour. It’s very manageable.

This approach has been fantastic in all the ways I expected: experiencing the wholes of Scripture instead of atomising it; seeing the interrelations between books rather than just standalone verses; hearing the big story of the Bible and not just “What does this mean for me?”

It’s not just a devotional practice that sticks, but one that allows the Bible to challenge me in all the right ways.
