5 sobering statistics about Christianity in Sydney

Sydney is growing fast. Christianity isn’t keeping pace.

At a recent conference, I discovered the following:

  1. Sydney is a city of 4.5 million people.
  2. 75,000 are in Anglican churches. 54,000 are in other Bible-believer churches.
  3. That means less than 3% of Sydney-siders are in a Bible-believing church.
  4. Half of Sydney-siders know someone who is a Christian.
  5. In order to simply keep up with population growth, 40 new churches are required each year.

This is sobering stuff.

Steven what is the source of these stats? Do they include pentecostal and charismatic churches?

    Hi John,

I’m not sure – the figures were quoted at the Exchange Conference (http://exchangeconf.net/). I’ll see if I can get a copy of the presentation.

Thanks Steve – it’d be interesting to know the source as the numbers sound low to me
