Promoting church in the local arcade

With an expanding staff team, our church office recently moved from being on the church property, to a large space that used to be a bookshop in the neighbouring block.

The space sits above the Kirribilli Deli, and part of our space includes a large glass window that overlooks the approaching arcade. Hundreds of people walk through the arcade each day, so we’ve decided to use this window to communicate with these people.

QR codes for Christmas promotion

In my last post, I provided some background information about the ‘what and why of QR codes‘.

On the inspiration of one of the wonderful designers from my church, we’re experimenting with QR codes on our printed materials this Christmas.

Below are examples of the products we’ve printed with the code.

These posters link to two Christmas videos embedded on our website. These videos have been optimised so that they can easily be viewed on a mobile phone.

Will people scan these codes and visit the website? We don’t know. We’ll use Esponce to track the use of the codes. We’re giving this a go as just one more way to engage passers-by with the good news of Jesus.

The what and why of QR codes

Have you seen an image that looks like a jumbled barcode? Something like this:

These codes can be generated online and placed on just about any product that can be printed. What’s the point?

Using a free app for your mobile phone, passers-by can scan the code and be taken straight to a link – a website, a song on iTunes, or other destinations:

There’s lots of creative ways of using QR codes:

JC Penny has some up with an interesting approach that ”allows the gift giver to scan and record a personalised voice message for the recipient… Once they are done, just stick the QR code Santa Tag on the present!”.

QR codes have even made appearances on wine bottles and buildings! You can learn more about QR codes in the ‘Ultimate Beginners Guide to QR Codes‘.

In the next post, I’ll explain how my church is using QR codes in our Christmas promotion.
