Web apps for ministry – what do you use?

This Saturday I’ll be presenting two seminars at the Create conference and I’d like to ask for your help. One of the seminars I’m presenting is entitled “I’m not cheap, I’m entrepreneurial”. At it, I’ll be sharing free or cheap tools to assist with ministry. I’ve got lots of ideas for apps that fit into this category (and I’ll be sharing 2-3 per category, plus some surprises!), but I’d like to hear your ideas. Below are some categories and examples – what tools do you use and recommend?

Poll: How should you begin an email?

A friend of mine always copped a lot of flak for his emails. He never bothered with niceties, and always cut straight to what he was writing about. No “how are you?” or “hope you’re well”. He just didn’t think this was necessary for email communication. After some suggestions otherwise, he now commences his emails with “Hi X, how are you?”, and then launches into it.

So is there an etiquette?

Personally, I think it’s rude to start writing without even acknowledging the person you’re writing to. For example, I’ve received some emails from church database providers recently who launch straight into answering my question, without any introduction to the email! If I were them, I’d include something along the lines of “thanks for your email and interest in [MY PRODUCT]” – contact is a gift and shouldn’t be painful!

I’m also not keen on the “Steve, blah…” approach. I feel there’s something to be said for starting an email with “Hi” – it’s two letters, but to me, they mean a lot. They are friendly and acknowledge you’re communicating with a person. Afterall, we usually start face-to-face interactions with a “Hi”, don’t we?

Poll: Where do you buy books?

Generally speaking, Christians love to read. And why wouldn’t we?

God has revealed himself to us through his Word. Scripture is an inexhaustible mine of resources for teaching, rebuking, training and equipping. God has equipped Christians with his Spirit to teach and encourage others. God has worked in the lives of saints to inspire future generations in godliness (this new book about Jonathan Edwards looks like a cracker).

So it’s not surprising that Christians also seem to have substantial libraries. I do wonder however, how many of us would be embarrassed to admit how many of the books in our libraries we’ve actually read!

The latest poll on Communicate Jesus concerns books, and where you buy them. I’m curious to see how many Christians use online bookshops, and how many head down to the local Koorong/Bible Society/ to get their books. Poll: Does your church record its sermons?

I’ve asked my friend (tech expert and innovator) Wayne Connor to write a series of posts to help churches record their sermons, edit these sermons, and then place them online so that people from their church or elsewhere can download and listen to them. In the spirit of all posts at Communicate Jesus, this will be aimed at the tech-illiterate – Wayne will share with us how simple this process can be.

To get us started, I thought I’d ask a simple question – does your church record its sermons? I’ve created a poll with a simple yes/no response – please let me know.
