“You Didn’t Invite Anyone” – A Lesson For Ministry Leaders

“You Didn’t Invite Anyone” – A Lesson For Ministry Leaders

A regional evangelistic event recently took place in South-West Sydney.

The pastor of one church had been promoting the event and encouraging the members of his church to bring their friends. On the day of the event, the members of the church gathered outside the venue. Lots of people had invited their friends. And one of the church members turned to the pastor and

As they waited, one of the church members turned to the pastor and asked him:

“Who did you invite?”

He hadn't invited anyone.

It was really awkward – why was the pastor asking the members of the church to do something that he wasn't willing to do himself? What impact might that have on future encouragements for people to bring their friends to similar events?

So here's what this means:

If you are going to tell other people to do invite their friends, make sure you are too.

Steve, I am so grateful to God for John Gray, who was Senior Minister at St John’s Park Anglican (now at St Paul’s Castle Hill). He trained me as a green new Assistant Minister in the mid-90s!

John led a church which had a real evangelistic culture. He preached the gospel of Jesus and his cross. He taught that heaven and hell were real and that lost people mattered to God.

But the key was the example he set.

You knew John would always have a guest at our outreach events. Often more than one.

I think in 5 years, I could count on less than one hand the number of events where he did not have a guest, and then I was pretty sure it was only after asking several possibilities that he’d have given up!

He didn’t big note himself for doing it. It’s just you can’t hide something like that. There’s be blokes sitting next to him, whom I’d not met before (or only at the last event), who were obviously his guests!

That inspired me, although I am not a patch on John, and I know it inspired others.

    The power of an example.

No, the power of a leader leading by example!
